Ask any group of Indian friends about dating apps and you'll hear the same three complaints. Someone got their number leaked and started getting random WhatsApp calls. Someone else gave up after a flood of "hi dear" messages. And almost everyone has paid for a premium plan that didn't change much.
We heard these stories so often that we stopped treating them as bad luck. They are design problems. Most popular dating apps were built for San Francisco or London and then shipped to India with a rupee price tag. Milox started from the other end: what would a dating app look like if it was designed around how Indians actually meet, talk and worry about privacy?
This post explains what "Made in India" really means for a dating app, how Milox compares with other Indian apps, and where we still have work to do.
What "Made in India" actually means for a dating app
Let's be honest first. A flag in the app description doesn't make anything better. Plenty of Indian products are average, and some foreign apps work well here. So when we call Milox a Made in India dating app, we mean three specific things.
The company is Indian. Milox is run by Golax India Private Limited, a company registered in India. If something goes wrong, you are dealing with an Indian company that answers to Indian law, not a support inbox in another time zone.
The product decisions are made here. Every feature on Milox was argued over by people who use Indian phones, Indian internet and Indian group chats. That's why we don't ask for your phone number, why chat opens only after both people agree, and why you can write in Hinglish without anyone finding it strange.
It is built for Indian budgets. Joining Milox is free. We don't lock the basic act of talking to someone behind a monthly plan.
Problems Indian daters face that most apps ignore
Your phone number is your whole identity
In India, a phone number is not just a contact. It's linked to your WhatsApp, your UPI, your bank, and often your Truecaller name. Give it to the wrong person and they can find your profile photo, your full name and sometimes your family. That's why Milox signs you up with email only. No phone number, no OTP. Read more about dating without a phone number.
The "hi dear" problem
Many women on Indian dating apps stop opening their inbox within days, because anyone can message them. On Milox, nobody can message you unless you've both shown interest. If you decline, that's the end of it.
Dating still happens quietly here
A lot of people in India don't want their cousins, colleagues or neighbours to know they're on a dating app. A display name instead of your real name, and no phone number linking you to your contacts, gives you room to be yourself without being discovered by people you know.
Paying just to talk
Most big apps make the free version deliberately frustrating so you'll upgrade. On Milox you get 500 Milox Points when you join, and you earn more by posting or watching short ads. Points are spent when you send an interest, so outreach stays thoughtful instead of spammy. Chatting after a match costs nothing.
Other dating apps made in India, compared fairly
Milox isn't the only Indian dating app, and pretending otherwise would be silly. Each of these is good at something different.
-
Aisle: Best for serious, marriage-minded daters, mostly in cities. It also runs regional apps like Anbe (Tamil), Arike (Malayalam) and Neetho (Telugu).
-
TrulyMadly: Best for people who want strong verification and trust signals before they match.
-
QuackQuack: Best if you want a large user base, including smaller cities.
-
Milox: Best if privacy matters most to you. Email-only signup, and you get to know people through posts and stories, with chat only after mutual interest.
If you want an app that feels close to a matrimony site, Aisle is probably a better fit than us today. If you want the biggest pool of profiles right now, the older apps have had years to grow. Milox is for people who want privacy first and would rather get to know someone through what they post than through a swipe.
How Milox works, in two minutes
-
Sign up with your email on milox.in or the Android app. Pick a display name. You get 500 Milox Points to start.
-
Post something. A thought, a photo, a story from your weekend. People see who you are before they see a "match" button.
-
Browse Discover and send interest to someone who stands out.
-
Chat when it's mutual. If they accept, chat opens. On the Android app you can also video call after matching, which is a good way to check someone is real before meeting.
What we're not good at yet
We'd rather you hear this from us than find out after signing up.
-
There's no iPhone app yet. iPhone users can use Milox in the browser.
-
We're smaller than the big apps. Milox is newer, so in some cities you'll see fewer profiles than on apps that have been around for years. Every person who joins makes it better for the next one.
-
Video calls are Android-only. The website supports feed, Discover and chat, but not calls.
How to choose any dating app in India: a quick checklist
Whether you pick Milox or something else, run through these before you sign up:
-
Who runs it? Look for a registered company name and a real contact address in the privacy policy.
-
What does signup ask for? Ask yourself if the app really needs your phone number, contacts or location to work.
-
Can strangers message you? If anyone can DM you, expect spam.
-
Is there a grievance officer? Under India's IT Rules, platforms are expected to name a grievance officer for complaints. Check the policy pages.
-
What's actually free? Can you chat without paying, or only see who liked you?
-
Can you delete your account properly? A good app explains how to delete your account and data. Milox has a delete account page for this.
-
Are there block and report tools? You should be able to block and report someone in one or two taps.
And one rule for every app: never send money, gift cards or OTPs to someone you met online, no matter how real the story sounds. More tips are in our Safety Centre.

Try a dating app that was built for you
We didn't build Milox to be "the Indian Tinder". We built it because dating here comes with its own worries, and those worries deserve their own answers: keep your number private, decide who can talk to you, and don't pay just to say hello.
If that sounds like what you've been looking for, join Milox free with your email, or download the app on Google Play. And if something feels off or missing, write to us at miloxapp@gmail.com. We read every message.
