Openers That Only Work for That Person

Written by the Milox editorial team · Published September 26, 2026

A first message works when deleting their name would make the message nonsense. If it still works for a stranger, do not send it.

The two-week cap is on meet new people online. Friendship tone is in three sample conversations. This is only the first line.

Lines that point at them

Hobby: “You said the kiln stalled at cone 6. Did you finish the firing or scrap the shelf?”

Move: “Three weeks in and the grocery shop still closes before you arrive. Have you found one that doesn’t?”

Sport: “That route map skips the hill. On purpose, or did the watch give up?”

Food: “The dumplings look store-bought in the best way. Which freezer aisle?”

Work-adjacent, without a CV request: “You mentioned night shifts. Do you protect a morning for sleep or is that already gone?”

Language: “You used the formal you and then apologised. Are you practising the formal on purpose?”

Photo with context: “The dog is wearing a raincoat. Is that a daily policy or a one-time humiliation?”

Book: “You quit on chapter four. Was it the narrator or the plot?”

Game: “You lost on time, not material. Blitz or you were cooking?”

Music: “You called that set too loud and still stayed. What was the song that made staying worth it?”

City complaint: “The tram announcement is in three languages and still wrong. Which stop do you trust?”

Callback, a week later: “Did the charcoal loaf get a second attempt?”

One question. Then send. A second question is an interview.

Lines that point at nobody

  • “Hey”
  • “How are you?”
  • “You’re cute”
  • “What are you looking for on here?”
  • “WhatsApp?”
  • “Can you help me with a payment?”

The first four are empty. The last two are a request for access or money before a conversation exists. Empty gets ignored. Access and money should end the chat.

If you cannot find a detail, do not message yet. Post something of yours, or comment on theirs in public, until a detail exists. A people app cannot supply the detail if both profiles are blank. That product, when you want one, is online meetup app.
