The rules — activity friend first, one line that you are not dating — are on make new friends online. These are the actual lines.
The bread
You: That loaf looks like it shelled itself. Was the Dutch oven too hot or did you rush the fold?
Them: Too hot. The bottom is charcoal.
You: I did that in March and ate the middle standing over the sink. Are you doing this every weekend or was it a dare?
Stop there. You have a shared failure and a cadence question. You do not have their number, their job, or a plan to “hang tonight.”
The boundary
Them: You seem cool, are you single?
You: I’m on here for friends, not dating. Happy to keep talking about the route if you are.
If the next message argues, you leave. One sentence was the whole policy. A second paragraph is a negotiation you already declined.
The week later
You: Did the charcoal loaf get a second attempt?
Them: Lower temp. Edible. Ugly.
You: Ugly and edible is the whole hobby. I’m trying Saturday. I’ll post it if it survives.
That is a friendship beat: a callback, no urgency, a public artifact instead of a private confession.
What these are not
They are not scripts to paste. Swap the loaf for the game, the language mistake, the bus. If you cannot name their artifact, you are not ready to message them.
If the room you need does not exist offline, a people app can host the artifact. That product page is online meetup app. The conversation is still about the loaf.
